The World of New Pangaea
This archive records the arrangements that emerged after the Global Revolution of the mid-twenty-first century. It does not claim perfection for the world that followed, nor does it pretend that every difficulty of human existence vanished overnight. It simply describes, as clearly as the surviving records allow, how a planetary civilisation chose to reorganise the basic conditions of life once the old systems of money, compulsion, and national rivalry had been set aside.
The Revolution itself unfolded across the 2030s and 2050s. It was less a single dramatic uprising than a cascading series of systemic failures and deliberate withdrawals of consent. Monetary economies, already strained by ecological limits and extreme inequality, lost legitimacy. Governments that had long managed populations through debt, propaganda, and selective enforcement found their authority evaporating. In the space that opened, new forms of coordination appeared—some spontaneous, some guided by individuals and groups who had long prepared alternative designs. Among the most influential of those groups were the networks associated with Lehrer/Sheen and the early orbital projects that would become the Laurasia stations. By the time the First Global Assembly convened, the outlines of a different order were already visible on the ground and in orbit.
The society that stabilised in the following decades is known, in the archival language of the period, as New Pangaea. The name is both geographical and aspirational. It acknowledges the single, interconnected planetary surface that space observation had made impossible to ignore, and it expresses the intention to treat that surface as a shared living system rather than as a patchwork of competing territories. Borders lost their former force. Currencies ceased to circulate. The great majority of manufacturing, logistics, and routine services passed to automated systems. What remained for human beings was choice.
Several principles recur throughout the records and give the new arrangements their distinctive character.
Personal liberty stands first. The interior of a citizen’s mind, body, and daily time is not regarded as a legitimate domain of collective compulsion. Education is voluntary and lifelong. Work is voluntary and often indistinguishable from recreation or continued learning. Movement across the planet and, for a season, into orbit is available to all. Psychoactive substances are legal; the old apparatus of prohibition, racialised enforcement, and black-market violence disappeared with the economic conditions that had sustained it. Speech, association, belief, and the shape of intimate life are left to the people living them. The society trusts, on the evidence of the decades since the Revolution, that most human beings, when material security is assured and accurate information is abundant, navigate these freedoms without requiring external policing.
Technology is understood as a servant of life rather than as an end in itself or a tool of domination. The maglev networks, the subterranean ground-cars, the rotating Laurasia habitats, the adaptive tutors, the Lyceum devices, and the closed-loop industrial systems all exist to enlarge the possibilities of ordinary existence while reducing the burden placed on the living world. Where earlier centuries had often asked what technology could do, the post-revolutionary settlement asked what it should do, and answered with a consistent preference for quiet reliability, reversibility, and harmony with natural systems. The illuminated translucent roadways that remain for limited hovercraft use, the heritage parks that preserve older machines, and the carefully bounded recreational zones for pre-revolutionary vehicles all reflect the same restraint: the past is remembered and even enjoyed, but it is not allowed to dictate the scale of the present.
Material abundance without money removed the central engine of organised coercion. When no one must sell labour in order to eat, and when no one can accumulate the power that concentrated wealth once conferred, many of the old pathologies lose their foothold. Poverty in the pre-revolutionary sense ceased. The despair that had driven much destructive behaviour diminished. Racial and national hierarchies that had been maintained by economic and legal force lost their institutional scaffolding. In their place arose a culture of voluntary contribution. Citizens offer their time and skill to the tasks that interest them and that the community needs—tending the transport systems, advancing scientific understanding, caring for the young and the old, maintaining the orbital stations, creating art, restoring ecosystems. Recognition is real but quiet; it travels through direct experience rather than through certificates or salaries.
Education and culture follow the same logic. Children learn first within the family and the immediate community, supported by adaptive digital tutors that respond to individual pace and curiosity. Formal schooling of the compulsory, age-graded kind was discontinued. Learning continues across an entire lifetime according to interest alone. No diplomas or professional licences stand between a person and the opportunity to contribute. The Lyceum—a personal device that serves as journal, archive, studio, and communications portal—gives every citizen access to the accumulated record of human making: classical art from the fifteenth century onward, the whole history of recorded music, scientific data, personal correspondence with friends and family on the surface or in orbit. Entertainment is abundant and uncommercial. The old mass-market formulas still exist for those who enjoy them, yet they no longer dominate by economic force. Music, image, story, and performance arise from voluntary impulse and find their audiences without the mediation of advertising.
Even the sky was brought inside the circle of ordinary citizenship. From 2075 onward the Laurasia stations offered every person at least one six-month residency in orbit. The experience is recreational, educational, or both, according to preference. Looking back at the thin blue atmosphere and the unbroken sweep of continents has become a common reference point in the culture—a shared reminder that the world is single and finite. The parallel robot-staffed Gondwana station and the later expansion of the orbital network simply enlarged the same invitation.
None of these arrangements eliminated human difficulty. People still grieve, quarrel, grow bored, make poor choices, and confront the limits of their own character. Illness, accident, and the irreducible facts of mortality remain. What changed were the background conditions against which those ordinary difficulties play out. The chronic emergencies of scarcity, enforced idleness or enforced overwork, institutionalised prejudice, and the criminalisation of private behaviour were lifted. In the relative calm that followed, a different tone became possible—one less frantic, less performative, more willing to let time and curiosity do their work.
The records that form this archive were kept for the most part without heroic intent. Ministry coordinators, station residents, ordinary citizens using their Lyceums, and the occasional reflective official simply wrote down how the new systems functioned, where they succeeded, and where they still fell short. Later generations, living in the long peace of New Pangaea, have continued the practice. The appendices that follow examine particular domains in greater detail: the redesign of cities and transport, the public opening of space, the voluntary character of education and contribution, the place of recreation and altered states, and the cultural life that grew once commerce no longer dictated its forms. Each can be read alone; together they sketch the practical shape of a civilisation that chose, with open eyes, to subordinate power to life.
The New Calendar counts from the First Global Assembly. By the time these words are read, that count will have advanced further. The arrangements described here are not presented as the final word on human possibility—only as the particular solution one planetary generation reached when the old solutions had become untenable. They remain open to revision, as all living arrangements must. What they demonstrate, if they demonstrate anything, is that the material and technical means for a gentler collective existence were already within reach, and that the decisive change was the willingness to stop using those means for the old purposes of accumulation and control.
In the quiet cities of New Pangaea, in the gardens that replaced the highways, on the trains that slip through tunnels and under oceans, and in the rotating stations that turn above the Earth, ordinary days continue. Children learn what they wish to learn. Adults offer what they wish to offer. The night sky is no longer the property of a few professionals. The record of human art and thought is open to anyone who cares to look. Technology hums in the background, keeping the lights on and the air breathable, while the people themselves decide what to do with the time that has been returned to them.
